Hosea 4:13-14
Konteks4:13 They sacrifice on the mountaintops,
and burn offerings on the hills;
they sacrifice 1 under oak, poplar, and terebinth,
because their shade is so pleasant.
As a result, your daughters have become cult prostitutes,
and your daughters-in-law commit adultery!
4:14 I will not punish your daughters when they commit prostitution,
nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery.
For the men consort with harlots,
they sacrifice with temple prostitutes.
It is true: 2 “A people that lacks understanding will come to ruin!”
Hosea 9:1
Konteks9:1 O Israel, do not rejoice jubilantly 3 like the nations,
for you are unfaithful 4 to your God.
You love to receive a prostitute's wages 5
on all the floors where you thresh your grain.
[4:13] 1 tn The phrase “they sacrifice” is not repeated in the Hebrew text here but is implied by parallelism; it is provided in the translation for the sake of clarity.
[4:14] 2 tn The words “it is true” are supplied in the translation to indicate that this is a conclusion drawn on the preceding behavior. Cf. NAB “So must a people”; NRSV “thus a people”; TEV “As the proverb says, ‘A people.’”
[9:1] 3 tn Heb “do not rejoice unto jubilation”; KJV “Rejoice not…for joy”; NASB “Do not rejoice…with exultation.”
[9:1] 4 tn Heb “you have committed adultery”; NRSV “you have played the whore.”
[9:1] 5 tn Heb “you love the wages of the prostitute” (NIV similar); NAB “loving a harlot’s hire.”
